Awards and honors earned by faculty and staff of the College of Engineering and Knowlton School of Architecture from September 2020 to February 2021.

Research Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Qadeer Ahmed earned an Ohio Third Frontier grant and Ohio Department of Higher Education RAPIDS (Regionally Aligned Priorities in Delivering Skills) grant for a team project to develop a retrofitted test vehicle, called a CyberCAR, to research cybersecurity and mobility, and promote safety and security in the next generation of vehicles. He also leads a project supported by the Department of Energy and leading truck manufacturer PACCAR to enhance the efficiency of freight vehicles.

Theodore Allen, associate professor of integrated systems engineering and computer science and engineering, leads Ohio State’s efforts on a joint $250,000 Secure America Institute grant to help ensure greater digital trust within the national manufacturing industry.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Shamsul Arafin and Professor Siddharth Rajan earned $400,000 from the National Science Foundation to develop the technology necessary to operate lasers more efficiently in the sterilization process.

Julia Armstrong, director of Ohio State’s OHI/O Informal Learning Program, was recognized as an Engineering Unleashed 2020 Fellow by the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN). She is among just 29 faculty across the U.S. to receive this honor and the first from Ohio State.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professor Bhavik Bakshi received a four-year, $2 million National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) grant to develop methods and tools for the assessment, design and innovation toward Sustainable and Circular Engineering for the Elimination of End-of-life Plastics. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Assistant Professor Li-Chiang Lin is a co-investigator on the project.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professor Bhavik Bakshi, Assistant Professor Joel Paulson and Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering Professor Gil Bohrer received a two-year $300,000 National Science Foundation 2026 Idea Machine Competition award to research the ecological capacity to provide goods and services in the face of demands imposed by a technological society. Bakshi also received a second $100,000 grant to envision a zero-waste world that is economically feasible, socially desirable and environmentally viable, and received the American Council for Life Cycle Assessment Education Leadership award

Bharat Bhushan, professor emeritus of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was awarded the Tribology Gold Medal Award by the International Tribology Council for lifetime achievements in the field of tribology. He was also ranked 440th worldwide for career-long citation in an analysis published in PLoS Biology.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professors Steven Bibyk and Ayman Fayed lead Ohio State’s work on the system-on-a-chip specialty area as part of the Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement Microelectronics Workforce Development program (SCALE), a $19.2 million multi-university public-private-academic partnership led by Purdue University

Assistant Professor of Architecture Ashley Bigham was awarded a MacDowell Residency during spring 2021 at the leading contemporary arts organization located in Peterborough, New Hampshire.   

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Carlos Castro and Physics Professor Michael Poirier lead a team of researchers awarded a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation program for their work on developing DNA origami-based nanodevices as tools to control cellular function inside live cell nuclei.

Landscape Architecture Section Head Kristi Cheramie published the new book, Through Time and the City: Notes on Rome. The book is co-authored with Antonella De Michelis.

Glenn Daehn, Mars G. Fontana Professor of metallurgical engineering, received a Technology Commercialization Award from the Ohio Faculty Council for his exceptional research discoveries and supporting the translation of those discoveries into marketable products or services.

Karen Dannemiller, assistant professor of civil, environmental and geodetic engineering, received a federal U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant of nearly $1 million to develop a smartphone-based test for dust to detect allergens that cause asthma symptoms. Key Ohio State collaborators include Perena Gouma, professor of materials science and engineering, and Rongjun Qin, assistant professor in civil, environmental and geodetic engineering. 

Engineering Education Assistant Professor David Delaine, City and Regional Planning Assistant Professor Tijs Van Maasakkers, and Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Professor Lingying Zhao and Associate Professor Qian (Victoria) Chen each received $10,000 Impact Research Grants from The Ohio State University Office of Outreach and Engagement in support of their community-engaged scholarship.

Darren Drewry, assistant professor of food, agricultural and biological engineering, and Stephanie Stockar, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are 2020 recipients of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Winners receive a one-year $5,000 research grant that is matched by the recipient’s institution.

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor Emre Ertin received a three-year, $750,000 National Science Foundation grant to pair sensors with deep machine learning to improve heart failure treatment. Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Ping Zhang is a co-investigator on the project.

Liang-Shih Fan, C. John Easton Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received a four-year, $2 million National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) grant to develop a small-scale modular chemical processing system to convert stranded natural gas and carbon dioxide into value-added liquid fuel products. Materials Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Vicky Doan-Nguyen and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Assistant Professors Joel Paulson and Andrew Tong are co-investigators on the project.

Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Daniel Gallego-Perez has received a one-year, $736,000 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to expand his tissue nanotransfection research to develop next-generation therapies for diabetes.

Materials Science and Engineering Professor Perena Gouma has been awarded a four-year, $1.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Smart and Connected Health program to develop wearable skin sensors to monitor metabolism and weight management. Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Asimina Kiourti and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Manoj Srinivasan are co-investigators on the project.

Jim Gregory, professor and chair of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has been awarded the 2020 Frank G. Brewer Trophy by the National Aeronautic Association.

Michael Groeber, associate professor in integrated systems engineering, and La'Tonia Stiner-Jones, assistant dean of engineering graduate programs, lead Ohio State’s efforts on a six-year, $40 million project, funded by the AFRL to create a national consortium to increase opportunities in the Air Force for minority STEM students and graduates.

Distinguished Professor of Engineering Winston Ho and Research Scientist Yang Han received $4 million in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory funding to expand Ho’s transformational carbon dioxide capturing process beyond the lab to the

Engineering Dean Ayanna Howard was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of her contributions to human-robot interaction systems.

Thomas Hund, professor of biomedical engineering, received a three-year, $1.6 million R01 award from the National Institutes of Health to develop precision treatments for arrhythmias.

Ohio State President Kristina M. Johnson is the first recipient of the IEEE Mildred Dresselhaus Medal for “leadership and technical contributions spanning academia, government, and business.”

Engineering Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs Rachel Kleit has been selected to serve on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Response and Resilient Recovery Strategic Science Initiative - Strategy Group on COVID-19 and Rental Evictions.

Mrinal Kumar, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was elected Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. 

Xun Liu, assistant professor of welding engineering, earned a five-year, $501,865 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation for her research on ultrasonically assisted wire arc additive manufacturing.

Architecture Professor Robert Livesey has published Architecture Stuff and More Stuff, a two-book set that explores a way of looking at architecture. 

Alan Luo, FEF Key Professor of materials science and engineering and integrated systems engineering, received the Distinguished Scientist Award at the 7th International Conference on Magnesium for his research on magnesium technology. 

Parinaz Naghizadeh, assistant professor of integrated systems engineering, leads Ohio State's involvement in a multi-university collaborative Fairness in Artificial Intelligence (AI) grant for addressing bias in AI and machine learning systems.

Computer Science and Engineering Associate Professor Arnab Nandi was named Ohio State’s 2020 Early Career Innovator of the Year. He also received Ohio State’s 2020 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, which recognizes superior teaching.

Elizabeth Newton, director of the Battelle Center and associate professor – clinical of integrated systems engineering, received American Astronautical Society’s 2021 Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award.

Xia Ning, associate professor of computer science and engineering, was awarded the 10-Years-Highest-Impact Award from the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM) for her work with George Karypis.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Professors Andre Palmer and David Wood earned a four-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop safer, chemically well-defined red blood cell substitutes that could help save lives.

Judit Puskas, professor of food, agricultural and biological engineering, has been awarded the title of Fellow by the National Academy of Inventors.

Engineering Education Lecturer Chris Ratcliff and Assistant Professor David Delaine received an Ohio State University Engagement and Outreach Grant to support their efforts to bring STEM activities to a community garden.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Assistant Professor Eduardo Reátegui and Professor Emeritus L. James Lee lead a multidisciplinary research team that earned a two-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a new testing technology to combat the current coronavirus pandemic and to address future viral outbreaks.

Cynthia Roberts, professor of biomedical engineering and ophthalmology, received a 2020 Distinguished Scholar Award from Ohio State in honor of her exceptional scholarly accomplishments.

Computer Science and Engineering Professor Han-Wei Shen was inducted into the IEEE Visualization Academy, the highest and most prestigious honor in the field of visualization. 

Integrated Systems Engineering Professor Ramteen Sioshansi was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of his contributions to energy storage in electric power systems.

Brian Strzempkowski, assistant director for the Center for Aviation Studies, received a 2020 Distinguished Staff Award, the university’s highest staff recognition. It honors individuals for exceptional leadership, accomplishments and service to the university.

Katelyn Swindle-Reilly, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and chemical and biomolecular engineering, received a $20,000 Disaster Relief Grant from the Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation to further her research on ocular drug delivery.

Rengasayee Veeraraghavan, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received a three-year, $300,000 grant from the American Heart Association for his research that will explore new ways to treat atrial fibrillation.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Jin Wang was elevated to Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of his development of high-density power converters and their use in electric cars. 

Xiaorui Wang, professor electrical and computer engineering, named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of his contributions to power management of data center servers and embedded systems.

Computer Science and Engineering Professor Dong Xuan was a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to connected coverage in wireless networks.

Aylin Yener, professor of integrated systems engineering and electrical and computer engineering, won the 2020 IEEE Communications Society Technical Achievement Award

Alper Yilmaz, professor of civil, environmental and geodetic engineering, was named Ohio State’s 2020 Innovator of the Year.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Assistant Professor Ruike (Renee) Zhao and her team earned a National Science Foundation EAGER grant to apply origami concepts in medical mask design to improve their shipping and storage.

Computer Science and Engineering Professor Xiaodong Zhang received the ACM/IEEE Micro Test of Time Award for his paper, “A permutation-based page interleaving scheme to reduce row-buffer conflicts and exploit data locality.” The award recognizes a paper that remains influential 18-22 years after publication.
