Each child will be able to build a toy drone glider and take it with them. We will spend some time talking about what a drone is, how to safely operate it, and the aerodynamics of how they fly.  We will then build the glider drones, and allow the participants to test fly them.  Best of all, you’ll take your glider drone home with you when you leave! 

Note: During this workshop we will provide one drone glider for each child, and one battery to power the drone. For groups with more than 1 child, the battery will need to be shared between drone gliders. Additional batteries may be available for purchase: contact eng-events@osu.edu for more information. 

Have you ever made your own crystals? Though well-known crystals like diamonds might come to mind, lots of substances can form crystals! The process of crystallization is a fundamental process in chemistry and chemical engineering. We'll show the process of crystallization by making rock candy crystals with the group, as well as demonstrations of hot ice crystals, and borax crystals. Each participant will be able to grow crystals on a pipe cleaner with a shape and color of their choosing! 

One job of engineers is to make products which are accessible to all. Participants will work in teams to adapt a pre-existing electronic toy so it can be used by a child with a physical disability. This will involve reverse engineering the toy to figure out how it works, choosing a function on the toy to adapt, and attaching a 3.5 mm jack which can be connected to an alternative activation switch. Participants will employ some basics of Boolean logic and have the opportunity to solder parts of the jack and wires. Appropriate safety equipment and assistance will be provided in this fun, interactive, and hands-on session. The adapted toys from the class will be donated to local toy libraries and/or given to local families directly, so, your work will have a real impact on a child’s life.
