Gamers give back

Posted:
Royer Student Activities Center will fill with nearly 200 gamers on Feb. 22 and 23, 2014 for Shuffle V, The Ohio State University’s premier Super Smash Brothers video game tournament.

Student organization E-Sports Initiative is hosting the event with official sponsorship from Major League Gaming (MLG). The event will be streamed live on MLG.tv with all venue fees set to benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital, as well as a portion of the entrance fees and streaming revenue from MLG.

E-Sports Initiative aims to prepare students interested in entering the interactive media and video game development industry with skills, insight and experiences that will connect students to companies in the industry.

“E-Sports Initiative is one of the College of Engineering’s student organizations. The majority, but not all, of our students are engineers,” said Deborah Grzybowski, assistant professor of practice in chemical and biomolecular engineering and the group’s advisor.

Shuffle V will include three games all stemming from Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers series, in which the objective is to knock opposing players out of the battle ring. Games include Super Smash Brothers Melee, its successor, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and Project M, a modification of Brawl developed by a group of creative Nintendo fans. Each game will host singles and doubles tournaments. The first day, participants will be organized into pools and play in best-of-three round robins to determine seeding for the championship bracket. Doubles’ championships will conclude on Feb. 22 and the singles’ championships on February 23.

The three-year-old E-Sports Initiative hosts video game tournaments throughout the year and collaborates with associates from major gaming companies to understand what the industry is looking for in entry-level talent. Currently, the club is developing an accreditation program that will teach coding, presentation and other skills necessary to break into the industry.

Registration for the tournament begins at 10 a.m. Feb 22. For more information about Shuffle V, visit http://shffl.org
