Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Betty Lise Anderson received the National Science Board’s 2022 Public Service Award in recognition of her extraordinary efforts inspiring children to pursue a STEM education.

Shamsul Arafin, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a $500,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development award (CAREER) to advance biomedical sensing applications.

Bhavik Bakshi, Richard M. Morrow Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, earned an Ohio State 2022 Distinguished Scholar Award in recognition of decades of research leadership.

Shanker Balasubramaniam was named chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Architecture Assistant Professor Ashley Bigham published the book, Fulfilled: Architecture, Excess, and Desire and was awarded Graham Foundation grant for it.

Nicholas Brunelli, H.C. “Slip” Slider Associate Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and his research group received the University Laboratory Safety Committee's 2022 Excellence in Safety Award in the group category.

Civil Engineering Assistant Professor Lisa Burris received the American Concrete Institute’s Young Member Award for Professional Achievement in recognition of her research to increase the sustainability of concrete construction.

Rachel Childers, associate professor – clinical of biomedical engineering, received the 2021 Herman R. Weed Excellence in Teaching Award from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. 

Materials Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Enam Chowdhury and XUV Lasers Inc. were selected to receive a $1.1 million Phase IIA award under U.S. Department of Energy High Energy Physics SBIR/STTR program to study damage thresholds of interference coatings used in infrared ultra-high intensity lasers.

Hendrik Colijn, assistant director of operations for the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis, received the Microscopy Society of America’s Chuck Fiori Award for “significant contributions such as the development of new techniques which have contributed to the advancement of microscopy and analysis."

Glenn Daehn, the Mars G. Fontana Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, is the director of the Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER) Engineering Research Center, which received $26 million in funding from the National Science Foundation. He was also awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by the ASM International Board of Trustees.

Engineering Education Assistant Professor David Delaine received a $597,000 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation to help improve the education of future engineers by preparing them to address societal challenges in meaningful ways.

Kevin Disotell, a research scientist in mechanical and aerospace engineering, received the Society of Automotive Engineers’ 2021 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Kiran D’Souza received a $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his energy harvesting research.

City and Regional Planning Associate Professor Harley Etienne has been elected to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning’s (ACSP) Governing Board for a two-year term. 

Liang-Shih (L.-S.) Fan, Distinguished University Professor and C. John Easton Professor in Engineering, was named a 2022 Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and received the Warren K. Lewis Award for Chemical Engineering Education. He also received the American Chemical Society Energy & Fuels Division 2021 Distinguished Researcher Award.

Daniel Gallego-Perez, associate professor of biomedical engineering and surgery, co-leads an Ohio State research project that was awarded $3.1 million by the U.S. Department of Defense to study whether tissue nanotransfection (TNT) can deliver therapeutic genes into damaged tissues quickly and effectively to improve the standard of care for injured military personnel.

Perena Gouma, professor of materials science and engineering, received an Ohio State Accelerator Award to develop a desktop high-throughput electrospinning system.

Athar Hanif, a senior research associate engineer at the Center for Automotive Research, was elevated to a Senior Member of IEEE.

Edward Herderick, director of additive manufacturing at the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence, received the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society’s 2022 Brimacombe Medal.

Ayonga Hereid, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, earned a $600,000 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation for his research to advance the motion control technology of humanoid robots and lower-limb exoskeletons.

Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Natalia Higuita-Castro received a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the Gilbert Family Foundation to develop next-generation gene therapies to treat neurofibromas. Daniel Gallego-Perez, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, is the project co-investigator.

Phu Hoang was named the next section head of architecture in the Knowlton School.

College of Engineering Dean Ayanna Howard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was also appointed to the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Committee, which advises the President and the National AI Initiative Office. 

Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Natalie Hull was invited to participate in The Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering 2022 symposium, organized by the National Academy of Engineering.

Thomas Hund, professor of biomedical engineering and internal medicine, was named director of Ohio State’s Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute.

Landscape Architecture Assistant Professor Katherine Jenkins and Clinical Assistant Professor Parker Sutton were awarded the 2022-23 Rome Prize for Landscape Architecture by the American Academy in Rome.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Asimina Kiourti received Ohio State’s 2022 Early Career Distinguished Scholar Award. She also leads a team that earned a $160,000 National Institutes of Health (NIH) R03 grant to advance stroke diagnostics.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Mrinal Kumar received a Battelle Engineering, Technology and Human Affairs (BETHA) Endowment grant for his public engagement and education project on how autonomous vehicles can revolutionize the practice of prescribed burning for management of forest resources.

Jesus J. Lara, professor of city and regional planning, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award and DAAD Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists Award to study social change and the built environment.

Materials Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Aeriel Leonard earned an Early Career Research Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for her research focused on fatigue crack initiation and growth in material systems.

Yingbin Liang, professor of electrical and computer engineering, leads a project awarded $1 million from the National Science Foundation Resilient and Intelligent NextG Systems program to advance unmanned aerial vehicle networks.

Computer Science and Engineering Professors Zhiqiang Lin, Kannan Athreya and Srinivasan Parthasarathy, as well as Integrated Systems and Engineering Assistant Professor Parinaz Naghizadeh were selected to participate in the first round of research projects as part of a new collaboration between Cisco and Ohio State.

Landon Locke, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and Katelyn Swindle-Reilly, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and chemical and biomolecular engineering each received Institute for Materials Research Kickstart Grants for their innovative research.

Ann Mallory, adjunct assistant professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering, was awarded the 2021 J. Cordell Breed Award for Women Leaders by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

William S. Marras, Honda Chair Professor of integrated systems engineering, received Ohio State’s highest faculty honor—the title of Distinguished University Professor. He is also a 2022 recipient of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s Arnold M. Small and Betty M. Sanders President's Distinguished Service Award and was named to the inaugural class of the Titans of The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering Professor Jay Martin was named Distinguished Professor of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Julie P. Martin, associate professor of engineering education, has been named assistant vice president for talent and team development in the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge’s Office of Knowledge Enterprise. 

Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Sara McBride-Gagyi received a $393,800 NIH R21 grant to understand the mechanisms of new bone repair surgeries and to use engineering approaches to discover new bone regeneration biology. 

Michael J. Mills, chair and Taine G. McDougal Professor of materials science and engineering, received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Ruhr-University Bochum.

Parinaz Naghizadeh, assistant professor of integrated systems engineering and electrical and computer engineering, received a $550,000 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation for her research on multilayer networks.

Alexis Ortiz-Rosario, associate professor–clinical of biomedical engineering, received the 2022 Herman R. Weed Excellence in Teaching Award from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. 

Associate Dean for Research Andre Palmer received four new R01 grants totaling $10.4 million from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 2021 to support his blood substitute research.

Landscape Architecture Assistant Professor of Practice Justin Parscher was awarded the 2022 Robert S. Livesey Teaching Award by the Knowlton School.

Integrated Systems Engineering Assistant Professor Shawn Pruchnicki was elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the highest level of its ranks. 

Biomedical Engineering Professors Devina Purmessur and Natalia Higuita-Castro lead an interdisciplinary team that received a $2.5 million National Institutes of Health award to advance their research and development of novel minimally invasive and non-addictive therapies for low back pain.

Food, Agricultural & Biological Engineering Professor Judit Puskas received an Ohio State Accelerator Award to develop a Buckeye COVID mask that has the filtration efficiency of KN95 masks, while being more comfortable to wear.

Integrated Systems Engineering Professor Mike Rayo leads the College of Engineering’s Reimagining Nursing Initiative effort, a collaboration with the College of Nursing that received a $1.5 million grant from the American Nurses Foundation.

Ronald Reano, professor of electrical and computer engineering, is co-director of Ohio State’s new Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering.

City and Regional Planning Associate Professor Jason Reece has been named interim executive director of the Kirwan Institute.

Steven Ringel, Neal A. Smith Chair Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Aaron Arehart, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, are senior investigators for a $5 million Center of Excellence in Radiation Effects by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Air Force Research Lab. Materials Science and Engineering Associate Professor Tyler Grassman and George R. Smith Chair in Engineering Sanjay Krishna are senior investigators.

Giorgio Rizzoni, Ford Motor Company Chair in ElectroMechanical Systems and director of Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research, has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Architecture Associate Professor Curtis Roth has been named the WOJR/Civitella Ranieri 2022 Architecture Fellow.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Jonathan Song received an Ohio State Accelerator Award to develop a prototype for a device-based solution for treating metastatic cancer.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Manoj Srinivasan received an Ohio State 2022 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Bobby Srivastava was named chief administrative officer for the College of Engineering.

Katelyn Swindle-Reilly, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and chemical and biomolecular engineering, was named Ohio State's 2022 Early Career Innovator of the Year

Barry Tolchin, manager of academic advising for the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, received a 2022 Distinguished Staff Award, the university’s highest staff recognition.

Lindsay Tolchin, senior academic advisor, received the 2021 Vladimir O. Marukhlenko Staff of the Year Award for exemplary service in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. 

Benjamin Walter, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and orthopaedics, earned a $630,748 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation for his research in multiscale mechanobiology.

William Wang, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, was named an emerging investigator by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

David Woods, faculty emeritus of integrated and systems engineering, was named to the inaugural class of the Titans of The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering Professor Alper Yilmaz received an Ohio State Accelerator Award to complete a market research study to support and validate development of a mobile application that detects and monitors stroke.

Julia Zhang, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, leads Ohio State’s collaboration on a $2.4 million Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) project to advance electric vehicle machine manufacturing. Co-leads include ECE Professor Jin Wang and Anthony Luscher, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Ping Zhang, assistant professor of computer science and engineering and biomedical informatics, has earned a $556,828 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation for his research related to improving artificial intelligence (AI) for healthcare.
