College leaders develop action plan for racial equity and inclusion

Following a series of productive conversations with students, staff and faculty since June, the College of Engineering has established an action plan to promote greater equity, inclusion and racial justice in the College of Engineering.

The responsibility for addressing racism and racial inequities within the college belongs to, and is a top priority for, the college’s senior leadership. Our community has brought forth thoughtful, constructive and actionable recommendations.

This Action Plan for Racial Equity and Inclusion reflects The Ohio State University’s strategic vision and values as a land-grant institution. It is implemented within the greater context of the university's actions and organizations dedicated to the elimination of racial injustice and inequity, and for the promotion of opportunity and success for all.

The actions are focused in five key areas:

  1. Professional Development and Training
  2. Talent Acquisition, Promotion and Retention
  3. Research, Curriculum and Course Development
  4. Undergraduate and Graduate Recruitment/Enrollment/Retention
  5. Fundamentals - Administration, Finance and Communication

The college also has committed additional funds toward the full implementation of the action plan’s strategies and tactics during fiscal year 2021, with future plans to establish a permanent budget and staffing.

Led by Interim Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Lisa Barclay, a resource web page has been created to serve as an important space for sharing information, learning and support. Updates and progress to the Action Plan for Racial Equity and Inclusion will be posted there at the end of each semester.

In addition to these actions, many College of Engineering departments and centers have begun planning specific steps to address racism within their areas of focus. We support these efforts and will continue to look for opportunities to amplify the most promising ideas across the college.
