Other awards and honors

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Research Associate Professor Qadeer Ahmed has been appointed to a three-year term as technical editor for IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.

Professor Anish Arora was named chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, effective July 1, 2020. 

Chris Atkinson, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was selected to direct Ohio State’s Smart Mobility Program.

Senior Director of Diversity, Outreach and Inclusion Lisa Barclay has been named interim chief diversity and inclusion officer and assistant dean for the College of Engineering. 

Jeffrey M. Bielicki, associate professor of civil, environmental and geodetic engineering, and his research partners received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Net Zero and Negative Emissions Technologies initiative to study ways in which carbon dioxide (CO2) can be used for geothermal energy production and renewable energy storage in support of reducing and reversing the flow of CO2 into the atmosphere. These efforts seek to mitigate global climate change.

Zuzana Bohrerova, associate director of Ohio Water Resources Center (WRC), leads the center’s wastewater COVID-19 surveillance efforts, which received a research award, as part of the Coronavirus Relief Fund through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. CARES Act.

Materials Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Enam Chowdhury and his team of engineers and physicists have been awarded a $1.056 million grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for the project, Femtosecond laser induced damage in extremes: from single cycle to atomic resolution

Jennifer Clark, professor and head of the Knowlton School’s City and Regional Planning Section, published the book, Uneven Innovation: The Work of Smart Cities (2020).

Tom Darrah, associate professor of Earth Sciences, was named the new executive director of Ohio State’s Global Water Institute.

Architecture Professor Benjamin Flowers has been named associate director of the Knowlton School of Architecture.

Jim Free was named director of the Center for Aviation Studies, effective September 1, 2020. Also appointed as a professor of practice in mechanical and aerospace engineering, he will also oversee the center’s research and outreach initiatives. 

Professor Jeff Froyd was named chair of the Department of Engineering Education, effective June 1, 2020.

Perena Gouma, professor of materials science and engineering, and Andrew Bowman, associate professor of veterinary preventive medicine, received a nearly $200,000 National Science Foundation EAGER grant supporting their work to develop a breathalyzer device capable of detecting COVID-19.

Associate Dean for Research Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska is co-principal investigator of a new U.S. Department of Transportation Tier 1 University Transportation Center led by Ohio State. Supported by a $1.9 million grant, the center will develop technology to combat GPS vulnerabilities to intentional attacks by hackers or unintentional interruptions.

Knowlton School Director Dorthée Imbert's "Vichy vert : les paysagistes entre technique et terroir" appears as a chapter in Architecture et urbanisme dans la France de Vichy (2020).

Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Asimina Kiourti and Research Scientist Alexandra Bringer earned a two-year, $145,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for their research on using biomimetic antennas to monitor patients’ core temperature while under anesthesia.

Engineering Education Associate Professor Julie Martin received a RAPID grant from the National Science Foundation to support her research exploring how choices made by engineering instructors during the COVID-19 pandemic are associated with undergraduate engineering students’ academic social supports and achievement of learning outcomes.

Stephanie Morgan, executive director of the Air Transportation and Aerospace campus, was elected Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. 

Devina Purmessur, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received a $377,520 National Institutes of Health R21 award for her investigation of the role of innate immunity on the development of chronic back pain.

Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Ramteen Sioshansi will receive the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers OR Division Annual Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research. The national award recognizes excellence in teaching operations research.

Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Rengasayee (Sai) Veeraraghavan leads a multidisciplinary research team that received a $2.2 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health for their work to develop new techniques that could prevent the development and progression of atrial fibrillation.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Jin Wang received the Nagamori Award for his contributions to wide bandgap power electronics-based electric machine drives.

Adam Wolf has been promoted to director of The Ohio State University Airport, effective August 1, 2020.
