Ohio State Airport to host fun-filled day, including one-of-a-kind 5K

Posted:

To highlight its contributions to both the flying and non-flying public, The Ohio State University Airport will host a free Open House on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for central Ohio residents. In conjunction with the open house, the Don Scott Trot, a 5K on the airport runway, will take place early that morning.

“This is our fourth open house and the second Don Scott Trot,” said Airport Director Doug Hammon. “Attendance increases significantly each year, so we won’t be surprised if more than 1,000 guests show up on October 3.”

The Open House will feature free Young Eagles flights for kids, classic and modern aircraft and trucks on display, Frasca flight simulators, the award-winning Ohio State University Flight Team, Youth Aviation Adventure and Career Eagles programs, door prizes, as well as tethered hot air balloon rides, helicopter introductory flight lessons, and bi-plane rides available for purchase. U.S. Army Reserve paratroopers also will be practicing drops from a C-130 aircraft from noon to 3 p.m.

A unique experience for casual and avid runners alike, the Don Scott Trot 5K on the Runway will begin at 7:30 a.m. Proceeds from the $45 entry fees will support Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic, a charitable organization of volunteer pilots who use their own aircraft to fly patients to and from specialized facilities for medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. Aircraft take-offs and landings will be suspended during the 5K.

In addition, some of the best food in Columbus will be on sale, including a $2.00 pancake breakfast from Jack and Benny’s Barnstormer next to the airport terminal. Also, many of the area’s favorite food trucks will be on hand, including Timmy’s Meltdown, En Place Foods, Aromaku, Juniors Tacos and more.
