A more aerodynamic street luge sled design, an off-road wheelchair device and a prescription management app are just a few of projects and inventions that undergraduate engineering student teams will present on April 28, 2015, at The Ohio State University.

More than 750 students, representing 12 engineering majors and 24 non-engineering majors, will exhibit 180+ projects during the 8th annual Engineering Capstone Design Showcase.

As part of College of Engineering’s focus on experiential learning, all undergraduate engineering students must spend one to two semesters tackling a real-world problem before graduation. Other projects on display at the event include a compact device that improves the typing and writing skills of individuals with cervical spinal injuries, nanofiber capsules developed as long-term contraceptives for feral animal populations, a redesigned ecological cookstove that is more efficient and emits fewer emissions, video games and a drug dispersal device that helps prevent accidental overdoses.

More than 70 companies sponsored engineering capstone projects at Ohio State over the past academic year including American Electric Power, Case New Holland Industrial, Dow Chemical Company, Eastman Chemical Company, Ford Motor Company, Honda R&D Americas, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, John Deere, NASA, Nationwide Insurance and NetJets.

Guest speaker Gregory Moran, SVP and CIO of IT Infrastructure and Operations at Nationwide Mutual Insurance, will present the keynote address, Design Thinking for the Future of IT, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ohio Union’s U.S. Bank Conference Theater.

Held from 12:00-3:30 p.m. the Ohio Union’s Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom, the event also includes the 12th annual FEH Research Showcase featuring the microfluidics portion of the first-year Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors Nanotechnology designs. Thirteen student teams will be present the results of their work through poster displays at the showcase.

Sponsored by ArcelorMittal and organized by the College of Engineering’s Engineering Education and Innovation Center, the showcase is open to the public and attracts several hundred visitors each year.
