The Ohio State University College of Engineering has received $300,000 from the estate of alumnus James R. Myers, a part of the largest monetary gift ever given to the Middletown Community Foundation—$5.2 million.

Myers, a Middletown, Ohio, native who passed away at the age of 79 in 2012, left his entire estate to the foundation and earmarked the money to establish several permanent endowments. Half of the funds were dedicated to the support of Miami University Middletown.

He earned his PhD in metallurgical engineering from Ohio State in 1964. Annual distributions of the endowment at Ohio State will provide merit-based scholarships to engineering students from the Middletown area.

“We are proud of Dr. Myers’ accomplishments and touched by his gift to support future students,” said The Ohio State University College of Engineering Dean David B. Williams. “His generosity has most definitely added to our legacy of engineering impact, excellence and innovation. He has paid it forward, and we will work tirelessly to ensure a healthy return on his investment in the future.”

Endowments also were established to fund scholarships at the University of Cincinnati, where Myers received his bachelor's degree, and a lecture series at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received his master’s.
