ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company, has continued its longstanding support of students at The Ohio State University, with the majority of its 2013-2014 gift targeted at the College of Engineering education, research, and career services initiatives.

The grant was awarded through the company’s Campus Partnership Program, a university relations initiative that provides funding to select U.S. colleges and universities to support special programs and projects, particularly in the areas of engineering and technology. Ohio State was a charter school in the initiative and has received more than $700,000 from ArcelorMittal since 2007 to help educate and prepare future engineers and industry leaders.

Ohio State’s graduate and undergraduate engineering programs are both ranked first among all Ohio universities. The undergraduate program recently rose to 14th nationally among all public universities. With more than 55,000 living engineering and architecture alumni worldwide, the College of Engineering features world-class, experiential learning programs within 11 departments.

“As one of the ‘cornerstone schools’ in the Campus Partnership Program, Ohio State has become a key strategic source of top talent for the company,” said John Gerrard, Division Manager, Talent Acquisition at ArcelorMittal. “We are honored to be recognized by the university and look forward to continuing this valuable partnership.”

The ArcelorMittal grant will be shared among several key College of Engineering programs.

The company will be the exclusive sponsor of the 2014 Capstone Design Showcase, a culmination of senior undergraduate capstone design projects from all engineering disciplines.

Ohio State’s award-winning First Year Engineering Program will utilize funds to enhance Engineering Summer Experience for high school students, end-of-semester events, and the Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors Robot Competition.

The grant also will support the college’s diversity initiatives coordinated by Women in Engineering (WiE) and the Minority Engineering Program to help current students perform at a high level and prepare incoming freshmen for college life and the rewarding challenges of engineering coursework. Additionally, the WiE Pipeline to Steel program will encourage female students to explore the steel industry and ArcelorMittal internship opportunities.

“Our partnership with ArcelorMittal positively impacts Ohio State students from the moment they choose this great university to the moment they embark on a career,” said College of Engineering Dean David B. Williams. “Companies like ArcelorMittal understand that tomorrow’s innovators, problem-solvers and leaders are being groomed here, and they’re investing in that future.”

Outside of engineering, a portion of the grant will help the Fisher College of Business Office of Career Management bolster an impressive array of services that match talent with growing companies.
