John Lippold Appointed Distinguished Professor

John Lippold has been appointed a College of Engineering Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering in recognition of his significant scholarly and leadership achievements. This is one of the highest academic honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the College of Engineering at Ohio State.

Lippold is a distinguished scientist, engineer and leader in the Welding Engineering Program at Ohio State who is recognized internationally for his contributions to fundamental and applied aspects of welding metallurgy and weldability. His work in the area of stainless steel and nickel-based alloy welding metallurgy and metallurgical control of cracking and defect formation has been especially influential. He was instrumental in establishing an online distance education degree program in Welding Engineering and currently teaches a number of courses that focus on the welding metallurgy aspects of materials joining.

Lippold serves as editor-in-chief of Welding in the World. He has been recognized with the Yoshiaki Arata Award from the International Institute of Welding (2009) as a leading scientist in the field of materials joining and the Adams Memorial Lecture Award (1997) from the American Welding Society for pre-eminence in his field. During his 17-year tenure at Ohio State, Lippold has graduated 38 MS and 20 PhD students and his students have won 44 professional awards for research carried out under his guidance. He has consulted professionally for over 50 companies, federal agencies and national laboratories.

Lippold is a Fellow of the American Welding Society (AWS) and the American Society of Materials (ASM). He has given seven named award lectures and has authored over 250 technical publications and two books.
