Ohio State’s EcoCAR 2 Team Featured in New York Times

The Ohio State University EcoCAR 2, along with students and faculty from the College of Engineering, were featured in the New York Times article, “Cramming for Degrees in Hybrids.”

EcoCAR 2 is a three-year student engineering competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors. The competition’s mission is a vital one: offer an unparalleled hands-on, real-world experience to educate the next generation of automotive engineers. It challenges 15 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu without compromising performance, safety and consumer acceptability. Ohio State’s EcoCAR team placed second in the previous three-year international competition.

Ohio State’s EcoCAR 2 team is currently competing in the Year One Finals Competition, which runs through Wednesday, May 23. Follow the team's progress in the on the Ohio State University EcoCAR 2 Facebook page. 

The New York Times article also discusses the need for engineers to gain multidisciplinary experience.

“I want to have every electrical engineer comfortable in the machine shop and every mechanical engineer comfortable in the electrical lab,” said Giorgio Rizzoni, director of the Center for Automotive Research at Ohio State. “You need people who know so many things. Our observation is, the auto industry likes to hire people with an advanced degree who have been exposed to a broad level of disciplines.”
