Excellence in Engineering Signing Day

Posted:

Signing days typically conjure images of student athletes in baseball caps, but what about students who excel in academics the same way top athletes excel in sports? The Ohio State College of Engineering believes in the importance of celebrating the achievements of the best and the brightest high school seniors and did so April 21, during its first Ohio State Excellence in Engineering Signing Day.

Excellence in Engineering Signing Day is a special event to recognize outstanding potential engineering students. Participants heard from Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee, College of Engineering Dean David B. Williams, distinguished Ohio State engineering alumni, faculty and current students about the university’s nationally recognized engineering program. They also visited the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, where they met Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer before watching Scarlet battle Gray in the Spring Game.

"These students are our future engineers, innovators and entrepreneurs. And here at Ohio State, our number 1 goal is to create an environment where students can become innovative thinkers, and where we can nurture the entrepreneurial spirit," says Dean Williams.

Engineering Signing Day was spearheaded by engineering alumni William E. White (’92, BS, metallurgical engineering and captain of the 1987 Ohio State Football Team), Robert A. Lauer (’67, BS, industrial engineering, ’68, MS, business administration), Joe L. Johnson (’61, BS, industrial engineering) and James M. Dickey IV (’83, BS, industrial and systems engineering).

"Engineering Signing Day represents a significant step in acknowledging the special talents of individuals who have excelled in the classroom and have earned special recognition as they embark on their pursuit of a degree in engineering and the potential for a rewarding career," Lauer says.
