The National Academy of Engineering today announced the election of Dr. Stuart Cooper as a member of the Academy. Cooper is a professor in the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and has served as Chair of the department since 2004.

Cooper received the NAE honor for his contributions to polymer chemistry, biomedical polyurethanes, blood compatibility and academic administration. With his election to the Academy, Ohio State now has 12 National Academy of Engineering members on its faculty.

Cooper’s election was among the 68 new members and nine foreign associates in the 2011 class, announced by NAE President Charles M. Vest. This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,290 and the number of foreign associates to 202.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."
