Betty Lise Anderson, professor, electrical and computer engineering, has been named a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America.

Paul Berger, professor, electrical and computer engineering and physics, has been named a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America.

Leonard Brillson, professor, electrical and computer engineering and physics, has been selected as one of 10 American Competitiveness and Innovation Fellows for 2010 by the National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research. Brillson received the fellowship, which includes funding for research, for establishing the optical signature of a leading defect in zinc, opening the way to monitor and study processes that promote p-type conductivity, a major current objective in semiconductor optoelectronics.

Stuart L. Cooper, chair of the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has been awarded the Society for Biomaterials 2010 Founders Award. This award is specifically given for long-term, landmark contributions to the discipline of biomaterials.

Jose Cruz, professor, electrical and computer engineering, was selected to receive the 2009 Education Society Achievement Award from the IEEE Education Society in recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering education through creative leadership and inspirational teaching.

L.S. Fan, professor, chemical and biomolecular engineering, has been elected a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering for his outstanding achievements in engineering and technological sciences as well as his contributions to China's development in engineering and technological sciences.

Robert Gustafson, director of the Engineering Education Innovation Center and professor of food, agricultural and biological engineering, has received the Massey Ferguson Educational Gold Medal, the highest educational award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Joseph Heremans, professor, mechanical engineering, was named Inventor of the Year by TechColumbus for his research and invention of high-efficiency thermoelectric materials for energy solutions.

John C. Lippold, professor, materials science and engineering, was awarded the Arata Award, the most prestigious scientific award from the International Institute of Welding.

William Marras, professor of integrated systems engineering; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Orthopaedic Surgery,received the 2009 Paul M. Fitts Education Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society for methods he uses to encourage his students to think critically and innovatively, using an interdisciplinary approach to advancing this discipline.

Carolyn Merry, professor and chair, civil and environmental engineering and geodetic science, was sworn in as president of the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

John Morral, professor, materials science and engineering, has received an American Competitiveness and Innovation Fellowship from the Division of Materials Research of the National Science Foundation for transformative and pioneering experimental and theoretical approaches to alloys by design, and for exceptional contributions to disseminating knowledge to students and the community.

Jack Nasar, professor, city and regional planning, has been selected for the Environmental Design Research Association Achievement Award for “Designing for Designers: Lessons Learned from Schools of Architectures” (Fairchild Publications: 2007), a book he co-authored with Wolfgang F.E. Preiser and Tom Fisher.

P. Sadayappan, professor, computer science and engineering, leads the Ohio State effort in the Center for Domain-Specific Computing, headed by the University of California, Los Angeles, and funded by a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Expeditions in Computing program. The center will conduct research to develop energy-efficient computing approaches that could revolutionize the way computers are used in health care and other important applications. 

Philip Smith, professor, integrated systems engineering, received the 2009 David Hurley Memorial Award for Aviation Traffic Management from the Air Traffic Control Association for his “superb contributions to air traffic management, through development of innovative solutions reducing traffic congestion and weather delays.”

Jeffrey A. Sutton, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, received an American Society for Engineering Education 2009 Summer Faculty Fellowship at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Fernando L. Teixeira, associate professor, ElectroScience Laboratory, electrical and computer engineering, received the Outstanding Young Engineer Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Microwave Theory and Techniques Society for outstanding early career contributions to microwave theory and techniques.

James Williams, professor, materials science and engineering, was named the 2010 Recipient of the H.R. “Russ” Ogden Award presented by the ASTM International Committee B10 Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys for outstanding technical and industrial contributions to the reactive or refractory metals industry. Williams also received the 2010 Diamond Award for Distinguished Achievement in Academia from his alma mater, University of Washington College of Engineering.
