The Ohio State University College of Engineering will host four programs for pre-college students during the summer of 2010. Organized by the university’s Women in Engineering Program (WiE), each of these programs is designed to spark students’ interest in engineering and to increase their knowledge of engineering-related career fields.

WiE CHEER (CHEmical Engineering Rocks) is a residential program for female students currently enrolled in the 8th grade. The program will give participants the opportunity to explore the field of chemical engineering through a variety of fun, hands-on activities and off-campus field trips to area businesses. This program will run June 27– July 2 and is sponsored by a 2009 Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Grant in the Chemical Sciences.

WiE RACE (Reaching A Career in Engineering) is a residential program open to male and female students currently enrolled in the 9th and 10th grades. The program will introduce participants to a variety of engineering disciplines and related career fields through a series of interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and tours. The program will run July 11 – 16 and is sponsored by the Honda-OSU Partnership.

WiE RISE (Respected, Involved, Skilled, Empowered) is a residential program open to female students currently enrolled in the 11th grade. The program will provide participants with an introduction to Ohio State’s undergraduate engineering majors and related career fields. Participants also will meet with current female engineering undergraduates and visit area businesses and corporations to see firsthand the important role that engineers play in our local, regional, national and global communities. The program will run July 25 – 30 and is sponsored by the Honda-OSU Partnership.

WiE GROW is a non-residential program for female students currently enrolled in the 7th grade. The program is designed to introduce participants to the exciting world of engineering and to ignite their interest in an engineering-related career. The program will run Aug. 9 – 13 and is sponsored by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company.

Admission to these summer programs is competitive. Interested students must complete an online application form in addition to submitting supplemental materials by mail. A $25 nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application. A $200 or $295 registration fee will be required to reserve an accepted applicant’s spot in a non-residential or residential program, respectively. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available to cover these costs. Additional information on each program, along with application deadlines and forms, can be found online at http://wie.osu.edu/content/wie-pre-college-programs or by contacting Ruth Friedman at friedman.194@osu.edu or (614) 247-7936.
