Research Bootcamp:

Includes an introduction to BMMB and research conducted by faculty mentors, an orientation to campus, biosafety and research ethics, and introduction to the laboratory workshop.

Research Immersion:

Students will be immersed in a 9-week research experience in an individual REU mentor’s laboratory. Faculty mentors will introduce the overall project goals and schedule weekly meetings with BUCKEYE REU students. Research ambassadors will serve as the day-to-day mentor in the laboratory.

Lunch workshops:

During weeks 2-8, students will attend professional development workshops over lunch. These workshops are designed to help students prepare for graduate school. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with professional development offerings hosted by the Graduate School’s Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP).

Tours:

BUCKEYE REU students will have the opportunity to tour Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) and the Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) during weeks four and seven.

Journal Clubs:

Throughout the 10 week program students will participate in six journal club meetings. The journal club meetings will support the student’s comprehension of scientific literature and technical communication skills, through reviewing and presenting on journal articles selected by the student with their faculty mentor.

Social and Networking Events:

Beyond research and professional development students will have the opportunity to network and socialize with current graduate students and other Ohio State REU students.

Research Ambassador Networking:

Starting in week two, research ambassadors and BUCKEYE REU students will convene without faculty research mentors for a near-peer mentorship and networking session.  Students will be exposed to current graduate student research and can openly ask questions about summer research and/or graduate school in general.
