Global Education through a Virtual Lens Webinar Series
Wed, Mar 3 2021, 3:30 - 5pm
Ohio State is committed to providing opportunities for students to gain intercultural experiences and global competencies both at home and abroad. To support a wide variety of recently developed virtual experiences through its Global Online Learning Initiative, the Office of International Affairs will host a webinar series, Global Education through a Virtual Lens, to share insight into the value of online collaborations for students and faculty.
Global Learning Going Virtual: An Introduction to COIL Virtual Exchange
Jon Rubin, director of COIL Consulting, will explore the rationale and ramifications of COIL Virtual Exchange practices as they are evolving in our changing landscape. He will present the basic principles and methodologies of Collaborative Online International Learning, and contextualize these with examples, describing how the practice can best be embedded institutionally. He will also share new COIL initiatives recently being developed.
From 1970-2000, Jon Rubin was known as a filmmaker and media artist. His career shifted when in 2002-11 he implemented a Cross-Cultural Video course where his students collaboratively co-produced videos with students in Turkey, Mexico, Belarus, and Germany. He then founded and became Director of the SUNY (State University of New York) COIL Center from 2006-2017.
In 2017, he created COIL Consulting as a vehicle to support universities around the world as they develop COIL initiatives. He is presently co-writing the Guide to COIL Virtual Exchange, to be published by Stylus Publishers in 2021. He has also launched the website COIL Connect which he hopes will become a directory of international institutions that are committed to COIL Virtual Exchange.
