Student Project Teams
Many students enhance their academic career by becoming involved in student project teams and organizations. These activities can provide leadership opportunities, hands-on engineering experience and a chance to meet other engineering students.
- Aerial Robotics Team
- The goal of this project is to construct an unmanned autonomous vehicle that will compete in the International Aerial Robotics Competition. The vehicle will compete based on its ability to sense the semi-structured environment of the competition arena.
http://tarc.org.ohio-state.edu - Aero Design Team
- Students in competition design and construct a small radio-controlled aircraft capable of lifting many times its weight. With a fixed wing size, the design goal is to lift off from a given runway length carrying the maximum weight, and land safely. The performance score, coupled with the predicted results determine the final champion. In 1996 the competition was divided into two separate competitions, a West Coast and East Coast.
http://aerospace.eng.ohio-state.edu/saecargo - ASAE 1/4 Scale Tractor Design and Pulling Competition
- The goal of this project is to develop a machine which is compact in size, relatively inexpensive, and can harness the power of a specific supplied engine to develop maximum pulling performance for short periods of time. Students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge learned from their coursework to a real world engineering design project.
http://buckeyepullers.org.ohio-state.edu - Baja SAE
- The purpose of the team is to design, construct, test, and race a prototype four wheeled, single-seat, off-road ATV vehicle powered by a Briggs & Stratton 10-hp engine. The project provides hands on experience in areas such as computer-aided design and manufacturing, finite element modeling and analysis, welding, machining, human resource management, and fiscal management.
http://www.osubaja.com - Big Beam Team
- Students design, construct, and test a prestressed concrete beam. The competition is organized by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). In 2006 the beam will be 16 feet long and will be constructed with support of a PCI producer, High Concrete Technology, Springboro, Ohio.
http://www.pci.org/education/engineering-students.html - Bio-Environmental Design Team
- Designs, builds, and tests biological and environmental engineering systems and projects. Team competes in the National ASABE Gunlogson Environment Design Contest. Team members learn the fundamental principals of biological and environmental engineering through hands on experience.
http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/fabe/asae/BEDT/index.html - Buckeye Bullet 2
- The Buckeye Bullet is a student organization with the purpose of designing the world's first hydrogen fuel cell powered land speed racing vehicle.
http://www.buckeyebullet.com - Chemical Engineering Car
- Works to design a small chemically powered and controlled car to compete in national and regional competitions. The current car utilizes aluminum-air fuel cells for power and a sulfuric acid and calcium carbonate based reaction for a timing mechanism.
- Concrete Canoe
- Students in this competition must design and build a working canoe entirely from concrete; then race the canoe against other universities in regional and national competition. The final product is a culmination of student ideas, workmanship, and applied consultation with working professionals in all areas of engineering.
http://hcgl.eng.ohio-state.edu/~ceg590/ - EcoCar
- The competition is modeled after the General Motors Global Vehicle Development Process, and will closely follow current real-world automotive design and engineering practices. It will challenge engineering students from universities throughout North America to re-engineer a crossover vehicle to achieve better fuel economy and lower emissions.
http://ecocar.osu.edu - Environmental Engineering Design Team
- Student team members use their engineering skills to design and build an innovative treatment operation to solve an emerging environmental problem. In 2006 the team along with 41 other universities presented their design at the National Sustainable Design Expo, in Washington DC.
http://www.ceegs.ohio-state.edu/~hwalker/CE590%20web/ce590_main.htm - FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognitionof Science and Technology) Robotics
- The First competition is between teams composed of high school students, corporate sponsors, and universities. The purpose of the competition is to design and build a part autonomous and part remote controlled robot. The tasks assigned the robot change every year. Currently, OSU sponsors three high school teams.
http://osufirst.org - Formula SAE Race Car
- The Formula SAE competition consists of students designing, fabricating, testing, and driving a formula-style race car. Powered by a 600cc Honda CBR motorcycle engine, these vehicles compete in acceleration, cornering, auto cross, and endurance events. Additionally, teams must submit cost reports, design reports, and make an oral presentation. The combined score from all events determines the overall winner.
http://www.formulabuckeyes.com - Micro Air Vehicle
- The purpose of the team is to design, construct, and fly as small as possible autonomous and radio controlled plane over a set course. The plane must locate and photograph a hidden target. The winner is the smallest plane that successfully completes the task.
- Moonbuggy
- Students are required to design a human powdered Moonbuggy that carries two students, one female and one male, over a .7 mile simulated lunar terrain course. The team does not have a size limit, but NASA only permits six participants to work on the buggy at the competition including the riders. The riders are selected based upon commitment to the team and physical ability.
- Rocket Team
- Focuses on three primary aspects of rockets: rocket airframe design and fabrication, rocket propulsion, and rocket navigation and control. The team designs, builds, tests, and flies a rocket in competition.
http://osurocket.org.ohio-state.edu - Solar Car
- The biannual North American Solar Challenge embodies the ultimate in complete design efficiency, with teams required to design and build a roadworthy vehicle powered only by the sun. With less than 2 KW of power, these vehicles must be capable of cruising 40-70 mph over 2600 miles across the continent.
http://www.osusolar.org - Solar Decathlon
- The biannual Solar Decathlon Competition is a US Department of Energy sponsored competition that challenges national and international teams of college students to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy efficient solar-powered home. The competition is held on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Houses are judged in the following 10 areas: Architecture, Market Viability, Engineering, Lighting Design, Communications, Comfort Zone, Hot Water, Appliances, Home Entertainment, and Energy Balance.
http://solardecathlon.osu.edu - Steel Bridge
- The steel bridge competition allows students to use their engineering skills to design and construct a steel bridge using their knowledge of structural design and mechanics of materials. Students must load the bridge to 2500 pounds, with the most cost efficient and sturdy design winning.
http://www-ceg.eng.ohio-state.edu/steelbridge/index.html - The Ohio State Engineer Magazine
- A student published magazine run by and published for engineering students. The magazine is published three times a year and is sent to all undergraduate engineering and architecture students, as well as to the engineering faculty and staff.
http://osemagazine.org.ohio-state.edu - Timber Bridge
- The Timber Bridge competition allows students to explore the complexities of bridge construction with a non-isotropic building material: wood. Students must construct the bridge, load it, then send their designs in for evaluation.
http://www.msrcd.org/bridge.htm - Urban Design
- The Urban Design Competition provides an interdisciplinary learning experience for students. Teams provide an urban design and a financial feasibility strategy for a large scale real life site identified somewhere in the United States.
