Scholarship Applications and Deadlines for Undergraduate Students Academic Year 2009-10

Academic-based Scholarships Only

The easiest way to be considered for all College of Engineering and departmental scholarships is to complete the College of Engineering Scholarship Application.

Please note, you will need to download, print and submit this application.

File two copies in 122 Hitchcock Hall on or before March 1. Check with your department to see if they have a separate application. All departments will accept the copy of the College of Engineering Scholarship Application and consider you for their funds based on it.

For engineering majors and pre-majors, the most important part of the application is the Personal Statement section. You should use the Personal Statement to tell us about your specific interests, experiences and goals as they relate to your current engineering studies and future engineering career. For example, your interests could be as general as manufacturing or consulting. An ECE major might be interested in power distribution or circuits. If there is a specific company that you are interested in, be sure to mention that. Discussion of classes and internship/co-op experience is also appropriate. While most of the statement should focus on engineering, it is also appropriate to discuss your financial situation. If there are financial hardships, please provide details.

Virtually all of our scholarship accounts are awarded based on academic performance here at OSU. Some of our accounts have additional criteria such as campus leadership, service activities or county of residence – but academics is the primary focus. A CPHR of at least 3.50 should be high enough to receive funding. Those with 3.4, 3.3 or 3.2 are on the bubble, where funding is possible but not certain. There is one account, the Herbert L. Johnston Fund, where the first preference is not grades but instead the number of hours worked during the academic year. The intent here is to acknowledge full-time students who work copious amounts of time and who have exhibited some academic potential (CPHR 2.5 - 3.0). So please use the Personal Statement on the application to let us know if you would like to be considered for the Herbert L. Johnston Fund.

International students are eligible to apply for engineering scholarships (both departmental and College), as most of our funds are available to all engineering majors and pre-majors regardless of nationality. Please note - scholarships for international students are usually small and range from around $500 to $1,500 per year. Please submit two copies of the College of Engineering Scholarship Application in 122 Hitchcock Hall by the March 1 deadline.

Need-based Aid

To be considered for College of Engineering need-based scholarships, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processors by March 1 in addition to the College of Engineering Scholarship Application as described above. It is important to apply by the March 1 deadline, even if it means estimating the income information reported on your FAFSA. Ohio State’s Office of Student Financial Aid is recommending that all students file the FAFSA on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
