Performance Plan Shapes College of Engineering Future

Engineering is exciting business. Whether it’s designing hydrogen-fueled cars or seeking alternative energy ideas, the College of Engineering is on a path to solve today’s and tomorrow’s global technology challenges.

Over the past year, the college has charted a course to excellence through the development of its first performance plan, “Excellence. Impact. Innovation: Advancing a Legacy of Learning and Leadership.” The plan will direct the college’s goals, strategic planning, budget and progress over the next five years.

“Our performance plan is a progressive document designed to build on the national respect and recognition that is the heritage of our college. It will keep us focused and on track to achieve our vision,” says Dean William A. “Bud” Baeslack III.

The college’s vision is to achieve world-class stature as a college of engineering through our excellence and impact in engineering education, research and service as well as the pre-eminent engineering college in achieving its land grant mission, ensuring Ohio’s global competitiveness and future prosperity.

“With this ambitious and innovative plan,” Baeslack says, “we can reach new heights of technological discovery and achieve national leadership in engineering innovation.”

In a bold departure from past planning efforts, the plan’s specific metrics will chart the college’s progress in the six areas that form the hub of the plan:

Undergraduate Education

Graduates must be well-rounded, with strong competency in science and engineering, and professionally skilled to be innovative and entrepreneurial, capable of leading multidisciplinary project teams and working in a diverse, multicultural, global environment.

Graduate Education

Maintaining and improving the college’s high national reputation will demand the devotion of resources to the recruitment and support of top-notch graduate students, especially minority and women candidates.

Research

To achieve top-tier status and contribute to Ohio’s turnaround, the college must continue to attract significant research dollars, foster multidisciplinary projects, involve both undergraduate and graduate students, and translate our research to new technologies, creating businesses and jobs that will lead to statewide economic resurgence.

Diversity

The college must recruit, retain and support a diverse group of students, faculty and staff to achieve world-class status. The college will make this a coordinated and systemwide effort at all levels, because that will bring a broader and more creative set of ideas and innovations.

Stakeholder Relationships

As the college becomes more entrepreneurial and transfers technology from the academic to the business world, it must strengthen relationships with alumni, public and private partners and donors.

Administration

Management of the college is key to achieving results, so the college must optimize its use of fiscal, space and human resources.

Every year, the college will prepare a scorecard reporting its progress against specific metrics.
