The First-Year Engineering Program
The First-Year Engineering Program places all students into one of two engineering coursework sequences during their first year of study. The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is a two-quarter sequence that teaches students basic engineering skills, provides exposure to various engineering disciplines, and prepares students for advanced coursework within their particular engineering major. University-designated Honors students within the College of Engineering will have the option to participate in the FE or FEH (Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors) course sequence.
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE): ENG 181 (3), ENG 183 (3), ENG GRAPH 167 (4) (optional depending on major)
Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors (FEH): ENG 191H (4), ENG 192H (4), ENG 193H (4)
While there are some notable differences between these two course sequences, there are many things that are common, including:
- Courses taught by College of Engineering faculty
- Exposure to a variety of software and programming applications
- Intentional development of oral and written communication skills
- Labs that are engaging, hands-on, and team-based
- Many group learning opportunities
- A quarter-long design-build project
