Ohio State University engineering students raced their student designed and built hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Buckeye Bullet 2, today in a successful run during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The BB2's first run on the salt track registered an impressive 149 miles per hour during its first clocked outing. The student team members report that the car ran well, the parachutes deployed (to stop the car) and that the team was very pleased with the car's performance.
Ohio State students have spent the past two years designing and building the BB2, a fuel-cell powered streamliner racing vehicle designed to break the speed record for electric vehicles set by the Buckeye Bullet 1 at Bonneville in 2004.
The BB2 will continue to race the vehicle during the week-long Speed Week event, from Aug. 10-17. The attempts are sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association®.
