Each year, Ohio State University recognizes excellence in teaching, service, diversity enhancement, and scholarship through a variety of awards programs. The College of Engineering is proud to announce that two of its faculty have been recognized by the University for their contributions to the academic community. Somnath Ghosh, John B. Nordholt Professor in Mechanical Engineering, received the Distinguished Scholar Award, and Ann D. Christy, Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.
An international leader in the field of multiple-scale computational modeling of behavior and failure of heterogeneous materials, Ghosh has made pioneering contributions to the field of integrated experimental-computational modeling of composite materials and polycrystalline materials. His early work on serial-sectioning, 3-D microstructural representation and characterization has prompted a number of current research programs. Ghosh received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics from the University of Michigan.
The Distinguished Scholar Award, established in 1978, recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger faculty members who have demonstrated great scholarly potential.
Christys primary research interests include bio-environmental engineering, field and laboratory studies of solid waste management systems, landfill bioreactors, fracture flow hydrogeology and contaminant transport, and design of ground water and soil bioremediation systems, as well as innovative methods for engineering and technical education. Christy received her PhD in 1991 in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University.
The Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching honors faculty members for superior teaching. Recipients will be inducted into the university's Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership for the improvement of teaching at Ohio State.
