College mourns passing of distinguished alumni William Fillmore and Philip Stevens

With sadness, The Ohio State University College of Engineering shares that alumni William Fillmore and Philip Stevens passed away recently at ages 99 and 79, respectively. The college had previously recognized these two men for their outstanding achievements and contributions to Ohio State and to the engineering profession throughout their lifetimes.

Fillmore graduated from The Ohio State University in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was awarded the College of Engineering’s Benjamin G. Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal in 2006 for international acclaim as a pioneer of plastic and polymer engineering. The Zanesville native and World War II veteran created several revolutionary products in his seven-decade long career with Owens-Illinois, Inc. Stevens earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Ohio State in 1956. Originally from Toledo, Stevens was active in Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sphinx Senior Honorary while at Ohio State. After receiving a Master of Science degree from MIT’s Sloan School in 1958, he became vice president of European operation at National Machinery Co. Stevens was awarded the college’s Texnikoi Outstanding Alumni Award in 1973 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1976 for his exceptional dedication and leadership in the engineering field.
