Buckeye engineers excel at 2014 Denman Research Forum

College of Engineering faculty and students were recognized for outstanding presentations at this year’s Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, held on March 26. 

Shaurya Prakash, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was named a Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor in recognition of leadership and support provided to competing undergraduate students. The Undergraduate Research Office created the award in 2007. 

In the research poster competition, four College of Engineering students earned first place honors. Materials science and engineering major Jake Benzing and mechanical engineering students Simon Kalouche and Brad Smith shared first prize in the engineering category. In the health professions—laboratory/cellular category, biomedical engineering student Ryan Reyes claimed first place. Cash awards were given to winners in each of the 11 categories. 

Jake’s advisor was Anupam Vivek. His research is focused on investigating vaporization of foil actuator welding of dissimilar metals. 

Simon’s advisors were Haijun Su and Aaron Parness, and his poster was titled “Gecko Adhesive Climbing Robot.” 

For his poster on “A Non-Invasive Method for Detecting Malaria,” Brad was advised by Vish Subramaniam. 

Reyes’ research focused on miR-23a as a key metabolic regulator in hepatocellular carcinoma. His advisors were Samson Jacob and Tasneem Motiwala. 

Other engineering student winners include: Robert Battista, second place in agriculture/environmental Science; Amanda Peterson, Emmy Schroder and Anna Ameser, third place in agriculture/environmental science; Michael Whipple, second place in health professions—laboratory/cellular; Marc Doan, second place in engineering; Anna Dorfi, second place in engineering; Scott Koch, second place in engineering; Nicholas Blum, third place in engineering; Bridget Crawford, third place in engineering; and Jillian Yuricich, third place in engineering.
