Ohio State University Airport welcomes intercollegiate aviation association

The National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) and The Ohio State University Airport are pleased to announce the latest partnership in collegiate aviation. Effective July 1, 2011, the NIFA headquarters will relocate to the Ohio State Airport in Columbus, Ohio. This new home will help strengthen NIFA’s ties to aviation academics and research, so it can better serve its member institutions.

Richard G. Smith, III, the new NIFA Executive Director and retired NetJets Executive Vice President led the effort to bring NIFA to Ohio State. “I am very excited to become NIFA’s new Executive Director and to relocate NIFA’s headquarters to Ohio, the birthplace of aviation.”

Doug Hammon, Ohio State University Airport Director, welcomes NIFA with open arms.

“NIFA calling the Ohio State University Airport home is a testament to Ohio State’s prominence as a leading collegiate aviation program, and the premier university-owned airport,” said Hammon. “A NIFA/OSU partnership will strengthen both entities through heightened interaction, cooperation, and visibility.”

NIFA was founded in 1920 for the purposes of developing and advancing aviation education; to promote, encourage and foster safety in aviation; to foster communications and cooperation between aviation students, educators, educational institutions, and the aviation industry; and to provide an arena for collegiate aviation competition. The organization is the governing body for the annual Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON), which was held six times at Ohio State, most recently this past May. Sixty-nine collegiate flight education programs from around the country are members of NIFA.

Beginning in 1917, The Ohio State University has one of the nation’s first aviation programs, training pilots for service in World War I. The Ohio State University Airport was built in 1943 to accommodate the program’s military and civilian pilot training. Today, the airport is one of the nation’s few university-owned facilities supporting aviation academics, cutting-edge research, and community economic vitality.
