Sharnnia Artis, post-doctoral research fellow in the Engineering Education Innovation Center and Office of Diversity and Outreach, received a 2011 Apprentice Faculty Grant from the Educational Research and Methods Division of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Bhavik Bakshi, professor, chemical and biomolecular engineering, received a part-time appointment as vice chancellor and professor of energy and environment at TERI University in New Delhi, India, where he will lead the first multidisciplinary, sustainability-oriented academic program in India. He will also establish a research group in India while maintaining his Ohio State activities to foster greater interaction between students and researchers in the two countries and enhance their ability to address global problems related to sustainability.

Gerald Frankel, professor and DNV Designated Chair, materials science and engineering, received the H.H. Uhlig Award from the Corrosion Division of the Electrochemical Society for outstanding contributions to both the fundamental understanding of corrosion processes and their practical applications and the Lee Hsun Lecture Award from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, China, in recognition of his contribution to materials science and technology.

Rosemary L.M. Hill, director of Engineering Career Services, was named one of the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ external reviewers.

Robert Livesey, professor, architecture, received the 2010 Gold Medal Award, American Institute of Architects Ohio’s highest honor

Aleix Martinez, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering, received a $1.8 million National Institutes of Health grant for “A Study of the Computational Space of Facial Expressions of Emotion.”

Srinivasan Parthasarathy, professor, and Hakan Ferhatosmanoglu, associate professor, both computer science and engineering and biomedical informatics, received 2010 IBM Faculty Awards, which foster collaboration between researchers at leading universities and at IBM research, development and services organizations and which promote courseware and curriculum innovation to stimulate growth in areas strategic to IBM. Parthasarathy was awarded for his work in data mining; Ferhatosmanoglu was honored for his work on database management systems.

Ramteen Sioshansi, assistant professor, integrated systems engineering, received a $1.675 million National Science Foundation Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation grant to study “Energy Policy, Investment, and Pricing Analysis Driven by Computational Steering” with Giorgio Rizzoni, professor, mechanical engineering, and director of the Center for Automotive Research; Ashok Krishnamurthy, senior director of research, Ohio Supercomputer Center, and associate professor, speech and hearing and electrical and computer engineering; and Matt Roberts, associate professor, agricultural, environmental and development economics.

Nawal Taneja, faculty emeritus, aviation, was named by Airline Business magazine as one of the top 25 airline industry leaders in the world over the past 25 years. Voted by members of the industry, he is the only academic to make the list, which includes Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, Singapore Airlines retiring CEOChew Choon Seng and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Transportation John Byerly. Lisa Tilder and Stephen Turk, associate professors of architecture, received the Housing Design Education Award and the Collaborative Practice Honorable Mention from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture for their work on the Pod Home.

Xiaodong Zhang, department chair and Robert M. Critchfield Professor of computer science and engineering, received the Overseas Contribution Award from the China Computer Federation at the 2010 China Computer Congress for his significant impact on the computing field and outstanding contributions to computing research and education in China. Zhang has been a visiting chaired professor at Tsinghua University and served on the advisory board at the Institute of Computing Technology in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
