Applications Now Available for 2011 Pre-College Engineering Summer Programs at Ohio State

Posted:
The Ohio State University College of Engineering will host four programs for pre-college students this summer. Organized by the university’s Women in Engineering Program (WiE), each of these programs is designed to spark students’ interest in engineering and to increase their knowledge of engineering-related career fields.

The programs focus on a variety of topics for different age groups:
  • WiE CHEER (Chemical Engineering Rocks!) is a residential program for female students currently enrolled in grade 8. This program, designed to give participants an in-depth look at important research areas and concepts within the field of chemical engineering, will run June 26-July 1 and is sponsored by Ashland Inc., Shell and Dow.

  • WiE RACE (Reaching A Career in Engineering), a residential program sponsored by the Honda-OSU Partnership and Ohio State’s College of Engineering, is open to male and female students currently enrolled in grades 9 and 10 and will run July 25-29. The program introduces participants to a variety of areas and career opportunities within the larger engineering field.

  • WiE RISE (Respected, Involved, Skilled, Empowered), also a residential program sponsored by the Honda-OSU Partnership, is open to female students currently enrolled in grade 11 and will run July 10-15. It introduces female students to Ohio State's undergraduate engineering majors and related career fields.

  • Sponsored by the Scotts Miracle-Gro Co., WiE GROW is a non-residential program for female students currently enrolled in grade 7. This program, which offers young women the opportunity to find out what engineering is and how it impacts our lives, will run Aug. 8-12.

Admission to these summer programs is competitive. Interested students must complete an online application form in addition to submitting supplemental materials by mail. A $250 (WiE GROW) or $350 registration fee (other camps) will be required to reserve an accepted applicant’s spot in a non-residential or residential program, respectively. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available to cover these costs. Additional information, along with application deadlines and forms, can be found at http://wie.osu.edu/content/wie-pre-college-programs or by contacting Kerrie Kirkpatrick at wieoutreach@osu.edu or (614) 247-6826.
