College of Engineering 2010 Faculty Awards
The College of Engineering annually honors faculty members for their teaching and research. A summary of the 2010 honorees:
Stanley E. Harrison Award, for an early to mid-career faculty member’s excellence in teaching, research or contribution to engineering concepts:
Yunzhi Wang, MSE, for pioneering and seminal work in phase field modeling of materials systems leading to recognition as the world’s pre-eminent phase field modeler, and for making Ohio State an international leader in the area of integrated computational materials science and engineering.
Boyer Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovation:
Robert A. Siston, ME, orthopaedics and allied med,for formulating and implementing a senior capstone design course on designing assistive devices for persons with disabilities, and involving teams of mechanical engineering students working with clinicians and occupational therapy students from the Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital.
“Building Bridges” Excellence Award:
Susan V. Olesik, chemistry, for her commitment to interdisciplinary research, outreach volunteerism and collaborative scholarship programs that create a rising tide of student interest and capability in all STEM disciplines, and for interacting with multiple engineering faculty in several departments and establishing cross-cutting programs in outreach and education that have significantly impacted the college.

David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award:
Jessica O. Winter, CBE, BME, for being a strong advocate for integrating technology with teaching, specifically, pioneering lecture “podcasting,” which has resulted in a technology innovation grant and presentations at conferences and campus-wide symposia, and also for being an outstanding undergraduate research advisor, with several students winning national awards
Dean’s Meritorious Service to Students Award:
Timothy A. Wolfe, MWH Americas Inc.,for teaching excellence, practical design expertise and enthusiasm through his incorporation of a municipal water treatment facility design from Lima, Ohio, into an engineering design project class for senior capstone and freshman engineering honors students
Faculty Diversity Excellence Award:
David T. Tomasko, CBE, for efforts at increasing diversity of the student population, promoting a culture of mutual respect, and creating supportive environments for diversity to flourish and having a tremendous impact on the interest level of women and minority students in choosing chemical engineering as their major
Honda-OSU Partnership Award:
R.D. “Rick” Gildow, for his leadership in the growth and development of the Transportation Research Center, serving as director and president for 18 years, and for his role as a key figure in the partnership between Honda and Ohio State
Innovators Award:
Joseph P. Heremans, ME, physics,for his invention of high-efficiency thermoelectric materials, making thermoelectric energy converters competitive in a wide range of applications
