Technical Graphics is the universal language of engineers from all disciplines across the world. The in-class portion of this first course in the Fundamentals of Engineering sequence is devoted to building a solid background in this fundamental skill using both traditional hand sketching as well as computer aided design (CAD).

The class introduces visualization and hand sketching of a three dimensional object in space. At the end of this course, students are able to produce two dimensional representations of three dimensional objects (i.e. orthographic views). Alternatively, they are also able to solve the inverse problem of creating an isometric (3D) view from a set of three mutually related orthographic (2D) views. Visualization is greatly aided by the introduction of Autodesk InventorŽ early in the course. This advanced solid modeling CAD software allows students to create virtual 3D solid models and engineering drawings of complex parts.

Other engineering fundamentals such as the use of Microsoft ExcelŽ for graphing and analyzing complex engineering functions, as well as non-technical skills such as written and oral communication and teamwork are also introduced as part of the course.
