What is CheME & YOU @ OSU?
Hosted by the Women in Engineering Program at The Ohio State University and made possible through a 2009 Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Grant in the Chemical Sciences, CheME & YOU @ OSU is a six-day, residential summer camp for female students who will be entering grade 9 in the fall of 2009. During the camp, students will live in one of the dorms on Ohio State’s Columbus campus and will participate in hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations designed to introduce them to different areas within the field of chemical engineering. These activities, demonstrations, and presentations will be led by OSU graduate students in chemical engineering. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit area businesses and corporations to learn more about what chemical engineers do in the “real world.” During the evenings, students will engage in recreational and social activities designed to give them an idea of what college life is like at Ohio State.
When Is the Camp Held?
CheME & YOU @ OSU will run from Sunday, August 16th, through Friday, August 21st.
What Is the Cost?
A nonrefundable application fee of $25.00 is required for all applicants, and admitted students will be charged a registration fee of $150.00 to participate in the program. A limited number of need-based grants are available to cover the cost of the application fee as well as the registration fee for admitted students. Who Can Apply?
Any female student who is interested in learning more about the field of chemical engineering and who will be entering 9th grade in the fall of 2009 is eligible to apply to the camp.
What Is the Application Deadline?
All application materials must be postmarked by May 15, 2009. Admissions decisions will be mailed out by June 15, 2009.
How Do Students Apply to the Camp?
Admission to CheME & YOU is competitive and will be based on an applicant’s personal statement, a teacher recommendation from one of the applicant’s current math or science teachers, and a copy of the applicant’s most recent grade report for the 2008-09 school year.
To begin the CheME & YOU application process, please complete and submit the online registration form, which is available by clicking on the "Register Online" link that appears at the top and bottom of this webpage. Once you have submitted the online registration form, a confirmation screen should appear with your confirmation number and additional information about how to submit your remaining application materials (including the $25.00 application fee, a copy of your most recent grade report and your personal statement, and your teacher recommendation form). You should also receive an e-mail containing this information. If you do not see the confirmation screen and/or receive a confirmation e-mail, please contact Ruth Friedman at the phone number or e-mail address given below.
Your application will be considered incomplete and will not be processed until your application fee, grade report, personal statement, and teacher recommendation have been received.
