Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering consistently ranks among the nation's top materials science programs. MSE consists of eight world-class materials research centers, internationally recognized faculty, extensive research facilities and talented graduates, and it enjoys the respect of industry leaders and academicians worldwide. In collaboration with other engineering departments and research units at Ohio State, our high-tech equipment and facilities support the educational and research programs of the MSE Department.
The discipline of materials science and engineering is the study of the behavior of materials based on their composition and structure. Materials engineers gain an understanding of the properties of materials, then manipulate them for a wide range of engineering applications in every area of technology development. Students in the MSE department are able to tailor their undergraduate programs to a variety of specializations, including biomaterials, ceramics, electronic materials, manufacturing, metallurgy and polymers, or they can design their own specialization with the help of a faculty advisor.
Careers in MSE
- Ensuring that materials used in automobiles can withstand the demands of a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty
- Developing low-weight, high-temperature ceramic tiles that protect the space shuttle during re-entry
- Working with other engineers and scientists to design biomaterials used in the human body
- Researching ways to refine materials used in electronics
