Undergraduate Research

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

While earning her bachelor’s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering, Laura Ensign focused her research on producing insulin particles for inhalation.

“My insulin project, which was my undergraduate honors thesis, was my first indication of what engineering research has to offer the world,” she said.

Perhaps the most influential part of her research was having the opportunity to work with her mentor, David Tomasko, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, who she believes taught her some of her greatest lessons.

“There are the obvious things, such as how to write a technical document, how to troubleshoot experimental issues and how to give an effective presentation,” said Ensign, “However, there are many other ways that he influenced my future that weren’t directly related to research. For instance, he taught me that you can have an easy-going attitude while getting a million things done, and even as you accomplish more and receive more accolades, you should be humble. My experiences with him led me to my desire to become a faculty member.”
