Faculty Awards

The College of Engineering Faculty Awards Banquet is held during Spring Quarter. Below you will find descriptions for the college awards along with information on this year's and past award recipients. Click here to submit award materials.

Boyer Award for Excellence

The Boyer Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovation is named for the late Ralph L. Boyer, a 1924 OSU graduate in mechanical engineering. The award is presented to a faculty team or to an individual faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the improvement of undergraduate engineering education. The award recognizes the long-term impact of educational innovation to improve the overall quality of the undergraduate engineering experience. It consists of $1,000 and a plaque and will be presented at the Faculty Awards Banquet to be held this spring.

Stanley E. Harrison Faculty Award

The Harrison Faculty Award for Excellence in Engineering Education was established by Doris A. and Stanley E. Harrison (BEE'58) and consists of $10,000 gross and a plaque. The award will be presented at the Faculty Awards Banquet in May 2009.

Lumley Research Award

The Lumley Research Awards recognize the research contributions of College faculty and staff. These awards will be made in three categories:

  • Category A - full-time professors and associate professors;
  • Category B - full-time assistant professors; and
  • Category C - research scientists.

Nominations should be submitted to your department chair. The application materials will all be submitted electronically. The total nomination package must be submitted by February 27, 2009. The amount of each award will be $1,500.

Lumley Interdisciplinary Research Award

The Interdisciplinary Research Award recognizes interdisciplinary research accomplishments of the College faculty and research staff. The award is given to a team who has established a record of excellence in interdisciplinary research as demonstrated by co-authored publications, joint sponsored research programs, and co-advised students. The team should involve faculty or research scientists from at least two different departments. Teams can include members from other colleges. Nominations can only be made by department chairs. Each department chair can be the nominator for only one team although he can support nominations made by other chairs. The application materials will all be submitted electronically. The total nomination package must be submitted by February 27, 2009. The amount of each award to an individual team member will be up to $1000, but the total award to the team will not exceed $5000. In case the team has more than five members, the individual awards will be reduced accordingly.

Innovators Award

The Innovators Award for the College of Engineering was established by the Engineering Experiment Station in 2007 and consists of $1500 and a plaque. The award is presented each year to an individual or team of faculty and/or research scientists who best demonstrate innovation in the development of a product and/or technology originating from the OSU research enterprise. Innovation is defined as the act, process or product that creates a new dimension of performance. This award recognizes the achievements of an individual or team whose innovation has successfully translated the research emanating from our laboratories into new products and/or technologies that can be used by the public at large. The award will be presented at the annual College of Engineering Faculty Awards Dinner.

Faculty Diversity Excellence Award

The Faculty Diversity Excellence Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2007 and consists of $1500 and a plaque. The award is presented each year to an individual faculty or team of faculty for actions and accomplishments that support the College’s priority goal of achieving excellence through diversity and creating an environment and organizational culture in which all individuals are accepted, respected, and valued. The award will be presented at the annual Faculty Awards Banquet.

Charles E. MacQuigg Awards for Outstanding Teaching

The Charles Ellison MacQuigg Award is named for a late Dean of the College of Engineering. The award is presented annually to faculty members who have demonstrated, in a superior manner, their interest in and willingness to help students, their interest in improvement of the high reputation of the College of Engineering, and their outstanding teaching ability. Students in the College of Engineering elect award recipients.

The David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award Fund

The David C. McCarthy Engineering Teaching Award Fund was established in 2007 in honor of David McCarthy, senior director of Development in the College of Engineering. The award recognizes the contributions of College of Engineering junior faculty and staff to create more innovative and effective teaching and learning. The amount of the award will be $4,000. Students, faculty and staff may nominate individuals. The Dean will select one or more award recipients each year. Individuals may receive the award more than once. Nominations should include a citation of no more than 50 words, highlighting the reasons for the nomination, which will be used in the program if the nominee is selected for this award.

The Dean's Meritorious Service to Students Award

The Dean's Meritorious Service to Students Award recognizes an individual outside The Ohio State University community for exemplary service to students of the College of Engineering or the Knowlton School of Architecture. This award recognizes the support of engineering or architecture students through classroom presentations, internship and co-op opportunities, scholarships and student organization or activity support.

Clara M. and Peter L. Scott Faculty Award

The Clara M. and Peter L. Scott Faculty Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement was established by Clara M. and Peter L. Scott (B.S. Electrical Engineering '49 DRH '95) and consists of $3000 gross and a plaque. It will be presented at the Faculty Awards Banquet in May 2009.

"Building Bridges" Excellence Award

The "Building Bridges" Excellence Award for the College of Engineering was established in 2007. The $1,500 award is presented each year to a non-COE faculty member at Ohio State whose collaborative work with the College has advanced the excellence, impact and reputation of both colleges and the University.
