2007 Texnikoi Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient
John Russell
John Russell is a founding partner of the intellectual property law firm of Alleman Hall McCoy Russell & Tuttle LLP. The firm opened for business in 2005; in its first year, it achieved the status of the largest new intellectual property law firm in the country, based on the number of issued patents. Under his leadership, the firm has continued to expand and now represents clients such as Ford Motor Co., Nike, Microsoft, Kawasaki and Mattel.
Russell holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a doctorate from Ohio State University, a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Before beginning his legal career, Russell worked in the research area of Ford Motor Co., where he developed advanced powertrain and emission control systems. He is a named inventor on nearly 100 U.S. patents in a broad range of technical fields, including fluid dynamics, control systems, artificial intelligence, combustion and electro-magnetics. Several of his inventions are used in millions of vehicles each year to reduce fuel consumption, improve safety and reduce emissions.
While at Ford, Russell was awarded Ford’s most prestigious technical award, the Henry Ford Technology Award, for his groundbreaking work in creating a new, integrated, exhaust gas recirculation system that provides significantly improved performance and fuel economy and reduced emissions at significantly reduced costs.
Russell is active in various bar associations and speaks frequently on issues relating to work-life balance and challenging the traditional law firm structure. He is a daily bicycle commuter and participates in various bike-to-work challenges.
Russell, his wife and their two children live in Portland, Ore.
