Graduation Requirements

To qualify for a baccalaureate degree in one of the engineering curricula, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. complete all the course requirements, or their equivalent, specified in a curriculum leading to the baccalaureate degree;
  2. complete the university requirements (curricular requirements and General Education);
  3. earn a cumulative point-hour ratio of not less than 2.00 on all hours undertaken;
  4. earn a cumulative point-hour ratio of not less than 2.00 on all credit hours taken in the department or academic area if your major is in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, aviation, ceramic engineering, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and computer engineering, engineering physics, industrial and systems engineering, food, agricultural, and biological engineering, geomatics engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or welding engineering; (1.70 if your major is chemical engineering).
  5. file a degree application by the eighth Friday three quarters prior to the planned quarter of graduation (ten months in advance).

Certification

It is important for every student to understand that, while certain curricula are designed for the purpose of achieving registration or certification by an outside agency, or both, completion of such an academic program in no way assures the student of successful registration or certification. No employee, agent, or representative of this university is authorized or empowered to provide such assurances either directly or by implication.

Graduate credit for undergraduates

An undergraduate may petition to take certain courses for graduate credit provided the following conditions are met:

  1. the student is a senior;
  2. the credit for the course is not used to meet baccalaureate degree requirements;
  3. the student’s cumulative point-hour ratio is 3.00 or above;
  4. the student secures permission by the end of the first day of classes from: the instructor in charge of the course, the secretary of the student’s college, and the Graduate School; and
  5. the course is offered for graduate credit.

The student must achieve a grade of satisfactory or better in such courses in order to obtain graduate credit. These courses may not be counted toward a graduate degree until the student has been admitted to the Graduate School and the departmental graduate studies committee accepts them and notifies the Graduate School. The hours are counted in the student’s graduate earned and cumulative credit hours, and the grades are counted in the student’s graduate cumulative point hour ratio. No more than 15 graduate credit hours may be completed under senior petition.

The senior petition form for obtaining the necessary approvals is available in the Graduate School office.

Transfer within the University to College of Engineering (ENG)

Enrollment for transfer students in the College of Engineering is competitive. Criteria are:

  1. If you have less than 45 credits hours, you will be considered under the criteria for new students in ENG as described in the previous sections.
  2. If you have greater than 45 credit hours and a GPA at your previous institution of 2.8 or greater (3.0 for Computer Science and Engineering), you will be directly admitted as a pre-major in the program of your choice. You may not enter as an undecided major.
  3. If you have greater than 45 credits but do not meet the 2.8 GPA, your application will be considered on an individual basis by the major you have indicated. You may not enter as an undecided major.

Students who are not eligible to directly enroll in ENG may enroll in the Science and Technology Exploration Program in Undergraduate Student Academic Services (USAS).

Admission standards and criteria are subject to change without notice; for more information, see the application bulletin. You can obtain one by contacting:

Probation by special action

If, at any time, the preparation, progress, or success of a student in an academic program is determined to be unsatisfactory, the college or school in which the student is registered shall be empowered to place the student on academic probation.

Academic dismissal
